The Basque beret is actually a Béarnais beret.

It was the shepherds of this region who first knitted it with the wool of their animals and felted it in the water.

The name of Basque beret would come from Napoleon III who stayed regularly in Biarritz and was struck by this curious flat headdress worn by the natives working on the site of the Palace which he had built for the empress.

Manufactured by a company dating from 1840 and labeled EPV.
